Baby Shower to be Held for Newborns in Need

May 21, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center will hold a baby shower for the local chapter of Newborns in Need on Thursday, May 28, from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Medical Center’s Ardmore cafeteria.

The community is invited to attend and bring a new, unwrapped gift which will go to help needy newborns in the area. Clothing items needed for preemies and newborns consist of cotton hats, mittens, onesies, and socks. Other items include diapers, BPA-free baby bottles, nursing pillows and covers, receiving blankets, powdered baby formula, car seats, strollers and baby beds.

Brenner Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Critical Care Transport Team will give tours of its critical care ambulance and offer curbside collections of donated items outside the main entrance of the medical center.

Several Wake Forest Baptist employees and community groups are donating items. Members of “Sisters Helping Sisters” at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Hamptonville are donating items including hand-made quilts. Members of Girl Scout Daisy Troop 408 are donating 10 Build-A-Bear Workshop® stuffed teddy bears they assembled as one of their learning projects.

A shower registry is available at Babies R Us on Hanes Mall Blvd., and online at www.babiesrus.com, under the name Newborns in Need.

Newborns in Need, Inc., is a non-profit, volunteer based-organization, whose mission is to care for sick and needy babies and their families; and in cases of crisis, to help where help is needed.  Volunteers make essential items such as blankets, quilts, burial layettes, clothing, booties and hats, often times at their own expense.

The items are then donated to hospitals, clinics, homeless shelters and other organizations providing assistance for premature and needy newborns. Donations to the shower will help babies throughout the Triad, including babies in need at Brenner Children’s Hospital.
