January 9, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Karen Hart Huey has been named vice president for facilities planning and construction at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, which comprises about 4.5 million square feet of space on several campuses.
Huey had been interim vice president since October 2006, while also serving as director of facilities planning.

The Department of Facilities Planning and Construction handles property acquisition, master and facility planning, construction, renovation and interior design. Recently the department has overseen about 160 projects a year.

Before becoming facilities planning director in 2005, Huey served as capital projects manager. In that role, she oversaw the completion of the 250,000-square-foot Outpatient Comprehensive Cancer Center and coordinated numerous other projects, including MRI and CT units, interventional radiology rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, a patient simulation lab and other general renovations.

Huey will report to Donny C. Lambeth, president of North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and to Douglas L. Edgeton, executive vice president of the Medical Center. “We’re so pleased to have Karen’s skill set and wonderful personality available to the Medical Center to lead this important aspect of our operation,” Edgeton said.

Lambeth said, “Karen will continue to be a great asset to the institution, as we complete existing projects and embark on new ones.” Construction is nearing completion on an urgent and primary care center in Mocksville, and plans are proceeding to build a new Davie County Hospital near Advance. Huey will also lead the development of a master facilities plan for the Medical Center.

A graduate of Texas A&M University, Huey was a facilities planner for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston before joining Wake Forest Baptist in 1997.
