WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Bruce K. Rubin, M.D., M.Engr., MBA, professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Pediatrics and professor of biomedical engineering at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Forrest M. Bird Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award.
This is a top research award given by the trustees of the American Respiratory Care Foundation (ARCF) and the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC). The award acknowledges outstanding individual scientific contributions in the area of respiratory care of cardiopulmonary disorders. Rubin is also a fellow of the AARC.
"Dr. Rubin represents what is good about our health system. He is a role model to all physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists, because he places his patients first, last and always,” said Sam Giordano, executive director and CEO of the AARC.
Rubin directs a large research group studying aerosol therapy for lung diseases, airway inflammation, excessive mucus that contributes to lung disease. At Wake Forest Baptist, he runs the only specialized mucus clearance clinic (for both adults and children) in the United States. He is on the editorial board of 12 pulmonary journals and associate editor for six. He has published more than 200 research papers and chapters and holds five patents. He is listed in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the United States, and Best Doctors in America.
Rubin received his undergraduate, master of engineering, and medical degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar to do postdoctoral work in biomedical engineering. In 2004, he completed an MBA at the Babcock School of Management at Wake Forest University.
