WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Vince Mendenhall, D.V.M., Ph.D., has joined Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as director of the new preclinical surgical services (PSS) section.
Mendenhall received his doctor of veterinarian medicine degree and his doctorate in experimental surgery and comparative anatomy from Colorado State University. After receiving his degrees, he was employed at 3M Company, where he developed their department of surgical research with an emphasis on medical device development.
More than 500 research projects were completed by Mendenhall during his time with 3M. These research projects resulted in the development of Tegaderm?, the Microvascular Anastomotic Device™, the Ligament Augmentation Device?, DuraPrep™, silicone malleable retractors, a biconvex, reverse haptic, hydrogel intraocular lens, and many other products that are now in clinical use.
Mendenhall was more recently employed by Charles River Laboratories, where he conducted over 50 surgical studies a year since 1993. He has developed many new surgical models for experimental medicine, medical device development, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology. The results of his development work throughout the years have been presented at 146 national and international peer-reviewed meetings, published in ten book chapters and 21 referred publications.
The new PSS section will bring over 35 years of combined staff experience to areas such as surgical modeling, neurology (specifically brain and spinal cord), orthopaedics, cardiovascular, ophthalmic, soft tissue and abdominal surgery in veterinary medicine. Services available through the PSS will include surgery, pathology, imaging and a clinical chemistry and endocrinology assay services laboratory.
