Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award Goes to Podgorny

The Medical Alumni Association of Wake Forest University School of Medicine has recognized George Podgorny, M.D., with its Distinguished Achievement Award for 2008.

Podgorny was presented the award Oct. 16 at the annual Dean’s Leadership Circle dinner by William B. Applegate, M.D., dean of the medical school.

After receiving his degree from the School of Medicine, Podgorny trained at N.C. Baptist Hospital from 1963 to 1969, serving as chief resident in general surgery in 1966-67 and also as chief resident in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in 1968-69. In addition to being the recipient of numerous national and international awards, Podgorny is the namesake of the prestigious George Podgorny, M.D., Achievement Award, established in 1984, which is presented by the Department of Emergency Medicine of East Carolina University School of Medicine.

Podgorny is a charter member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He served on its board of directors from 1974 to 1980 and was president 1978 to 1979. In 1988, he received the association’s James D. Mills Award for his significant contributions to emergency medicine.
