WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Vickey G. Lewis, R.N., B.S.N., of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, was recently awarded the annual John Burwell Excellence in Emergency Management Services (EMS) award.
The award is given in memory of John Burwell of Stokes County by the N.C. Region I EMS. The award recognizes those individuals who have made a significant impact on EMS within the counties of Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin, which make up Region I. Burwell dedicated his life to improving pre-hospital care, the quality of life for citizens and the overall regional EMS system.
Myron Waddell, chairman of the Region I EMS Advisory Council, said that Lewis is described by colleagues as a “compassionate leader” who gives her time to mentor others and is passionate about what she does.
Lewis, who is also a certified emergency nurse and emergency medical technician, is manager of Emergency Resuscitation Services at Wake Forest Baptist. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing at Winston-Salem State University in 1978 and began her career at Wake Forest Baptist as a staff nurse in the Emergency Department. She has also served as the coordinator of the life support education department.
“There are several people who were part of the presentation group who were much too kind in describing my efforts, when what the award is really about is the many people who have worked together over the years to develop the premier pre-hospital care system that we have in North Carolina,” Lewis said.
