Wake Forest Baptist Obstetrical Anesthesiologist Recognized as an Extraordinary Mom

January 9, 2008

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Medge Owen, M.D., an obstetrical anesthesiologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been chosen as one of five national finalists by Cookie magazine for its “people’s choice” Smart Cookie Award.
This annual award recognizes mothers who are making a significant difference for women and children in the world. The five finalists are chosen by the magazine’s editors, and then a winner is chosen by visitors to the magazine’s website.
Owen was nominated for her work with Kybele, a non-profit humanitarian organization that improves obstetrical medicine in developing countries. Owen and her multidisciplinary team of anesthesiologists, obstetricians, nurses, midwives, neonatologists and internists from all over the world have taught modern medical practices and compassion to doctors and hospital staff in countries such as Croatia, Ghana, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey.
If Owen wins the people’s choice award, she will join other high-profile honorees from the fields of health, politics, science and social work. Last year, some of these moms included Mariska Hargitay, Cynthia Nixon and Sharon Stone, who champions amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research.
Cookie is a family lifestyle magazine published by Condé Nast Publications. For more information or to vote for the people’s choice Smart Cookie Award, visit cookiemag.com/go/smartcookie. Voting takes place Jan. 9 through Feb. 8.
