Wake Forest Baptist Professors Promoted

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sally Shumaker, Ph.D., professor and associate dean for research, has been appointed to senior associate dean for research of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. David Friedman, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology, was also appointed to associate dean for research.
The appointments were announced by William B. Applegate, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., dean and interim president of Wake Forest University Health Sciences.
“Dr. Sally Shumaker has completely reorganized the scope of our Office of Research, instituting a number of key services to further support our science faculty,” said Applegate. “Dr. David Friedman has led the development of our research infrastructure in our downtown research park.”
Shumaker, who has been a faculty member in the department of Public Health Sciences since 1990, is a graduate of Wayne State University. She earned her masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan and completed post-doctorate training at the University of California. Her most recent research interests include the study of women’s cognitive health and the effectiveness of treatment for patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders.
Friedman has also been a faculty member since 1990 in the department of physiology and pharmacology and is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He earned his masters and doctorate degrees from New York Medical College and completed post-doctorate training at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. His research interests include the neurobiology of addictions, cognitive function and drug policy. He also believes strongly in the importance of explaining science to lay audiences, including children and pre-college science programs.
Steve Block, Ph.D., remains the senior associate dean, and will continue to have broad oversight of clinical and academic missions.
