WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is the first in Winston-Salem to offer the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine to new and existing patients.
HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. One in four young adults in the United Stated currently have genital HPV. Most people who have HPV don’t even know it – usually there are no signs or symptoms. The Food and Drug Administration recommends the HPV vaccine for ages 9 to 25.
The shots are given in a series of three – the second shot is given at two months, and the third is given at six months. The cost for the series of shots is $680.
