WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center dedicated $147.2 million of its total $1.348 billion budget – 10.9 percent – toward initiatives that strengthen the foundation of community health, according to a recently compiled report for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2005.
The total funding includes $75.6 million in charity care and non-reimbursed Medicare and Medicaid services, $60.6 million in medical education, training and research, and $11 million in subsidized and non-billed services and cash and in-kind donations.
The Medical Center takes a leadership role in community health assessment, planning and outcomes measurement, and working collaboratively with many local organizations to identify emerging needs and solutions. It also provides a wide range of services and outreach programs that are considered community benefits.
The Medical Center total includes individual totals from Wake Forest University Health Sciences and North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Each annually submits reports to the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The individual and joint reports are posted at www.wfubmc.edu/communitybenefits/.
