Brenner Children’s Hospital will host an open house for its new Family Resource Center (library) on Friday, June 24th from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The center is located on the 7th Floor of the Brenner Tower, on the campus of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and is available to inpatient and outpatient families, as well as the community. The children’s section, The Carolyn Rinker Tate Learning Center, houses children’s books donated by organizations and individuals.
The medical library consists of books on various types of illnesses, diseases, parenting, and growth and development from birth to adolescence. Computers are available to search websites for health information. Anatomical models teach parents and children about different body organs and functions and are used by hospital staff for patient education. The center also houses the Wireless NICU Family Knowledge System. This visual tool is used in the neonatal intensive care unit for parents to learn valuable information at the bedside. The computer software is available in five languages, has a touch-screen monitor, and consists of programs from “Basic Care of Your Preemie” to a “Sibling Center.”
The center is staffed by volunteers, a pediatric nurse educator and clinical nurse specialists who assist families in finding and interpreting health information.
“We want to encourage parents and caregivers to be proactive in their child’s development and knowledgeable about their illnesses and treatment,” said Tracey Redmon, R.N., B.S.N., and a pediatric nurse educator at Brenner Children’s Hospital. “We are excited to provide patients and families a quick and easy way to access consumer health information whether they are a patient, here for a clinic visit, or visiting the Medical Center.”
The Family Resource Center is partially funded by an award from the National Library of Medicine.
“The Coy C. Carpenter Medical Library and the Forsyth County Public Library were instrumental in getting this award for us,” Redmon said.
The resource center is linked to the Coy C. Carpenter Medical Library of Wake Forest University School of Medicine; Best Health at Hanes Mall, the community health resource center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center; and the Forsyth County Public Library.
