WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Robert H. DuRant, Ph.D., a pediatric researcher at Brenner Children’s Hospital (part of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center), was recently elected as an honorary fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This is a special classification of membership for distinguished physicians and non-physicians of national or international stature who have made outstanding contributions to children’s health.
“We are delighted that the AAP chose to recognize Dr. DuRant’s extensive work with social issues that can profoundly affect children’s health,” said Jon S. Abramson, M.D. chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist.
DuRant’s appointment as an honorary fellow in the AAP is a life-long appointment. He joins only a handful of other non-physician and physicians, both nationally and internationally, who have been elected to this position and is only the second person in North Carolina appointed as an honorary fellow.
DuRant joined the faculty as professor and vice-chairman of pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist in 1996. He has written numerous papers studying how various social issues can impact children’s health, such as violence in the media and its effect on children’s behaviors.
