WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center will hold its annual Christmas star lighting and worship service Monday, Nov. 29 at 5:45 p.m. The public is invited.
The worship service will be held at the Wake Forest Baptist employee parking lot on Cloverdale Avenue across from the Shell gas station. Famous country music legend and regular Grand Ole Opry performer George Hamilton IV, will lead the service. This unique outdoor service will feature Hamilton’s music and reflections, the Medical Center Chorale and the lighting of the star.
The 31-foot star is anchored to the roof of Wake Forest Baptist’s North Tower. It weighs 3,400 pounds and is constructed of 26 aluminum points attached to an octagonal-shaped center core. The eight- and 11-foot long points are covered with a vinyl-coated nylon mesh. A 150-watt floodlight illuminates each point. The star was constructed in 1992 by Cosco Sign Co. in Lexington and believed to be one of the largest Moravian stars ever built.
Hamilton, a Winston-Salem native and member of the North Carolina Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for 45 years. He frequently shares his music with churches and has performed for several Billy Graham crusades and conducted Christian concert tours across the United States and Europe. In 2004, he produced three new albums and received two major award nominations for gospel music.
