WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has won the 2004 Working to End Domestic Violence Excellence Award. The award is given by Family Services’ Domestic Violence Community Council to honor a Forsyth County business that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in its efforts to address domestic violence in the workplace.
The Medical Center’s efforts to address domestic violence include developing workplace violence policies, providing an employee assistance program, developing a program in the emergency department for specially trained nurses to examine victims of sexual abuse, providing assessment, referral and counseling for batterers and victims, providing workplace security for victims and providing referral materials to new employees.
Efforts also reach community organizations through the Women’s Health Center of Excellence at Wake Forest Baptist. The center hosts an annual triathlon that raises money for domestic violence prevention and assistance programs in the community. The triathlon also provides funding to researchers at the Medical Center to investigate this understudied topic.
The award was presented on Oct. 1, which is National Work to End Domestic Violence Day.
