U.S. Health and Human Service Secretary Tommy G. Thompson Friday named Nancy L. Jones, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology at Wake Forest University Health Sciences, to an 11-member Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection. "We must make sure that we allow science and medical research to advance for the good of all Americans, but not at the expense of the people who participate in clinical trials," Thompson said in announcing the panel, which will be chaired by Ernest Prentice, Ph.D., associate dean for research and vice chancellor for academic affairs and regulatory compliance at the University of Nebraska Medical School..
The committee will advise Thompson on responsible conduct of research involving human subjects. The charter includes a range of special populations such as children, neonates, pregnant women, embryos and fetuses and a variety of others.
"I''m thrilled with the opportunity to play such an important role for our country," said Jones. "I hope to make sure that studies are done in an ethical manner."
