Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center?s Ranking Improves After Correction

July 24, 2002

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina Baptist Hospital has had its ranking as a cancer center boosted to 23rd in America by U.S. News & World Report, as the result of a correction in the magazine’s calculations. In the issue of the magazine on sale July 22, the following correction was printed:

"Because of a processing error North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, did not receive credit as an NCI designated cancer center in the ''America''s Best Hospitals'' Cancer ranking (July 22). As a result the hospital should be ranked number 23 rather than 42 and hospitals between 23 and 41 drop one place."

“I am delighted that U.S. News and World Report has recognized that our hospital is an integral part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Ranking 23rd in the country is recognition of the dedication and hard work of our faculty not only in providing the finest care available, but also in focusing our research efforts on finding a cure for many cancers,” said Frank Torti, M.D., M.P.H., Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University.

The ranking places it above respected facilities like Vanderbilt University Hospital, Yale-New Haven Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital. U.S. News & World Report recently listed North Carolina Baptist Hospital, the teaching hospital of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, as one of America’s best hospitals in six categories.
