WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Neighborhood Heritage Day – an event to honor East Winston residents and dedicate new community walking trails – will be held on April 20.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a ceremony at 14th and Cameron Avenue to dedicate six “heritage trails” – walking routes that pass by historical sites and interesting architecture in the East Winston area. Walking and trolley tours of the trails will leave from Skyland Park throughout the day.
The trails, which were developed to increase physical activity and build civic pride, are part of a project of the BeHealthy Coalition of the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. Researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center are organizing Heritage Day and setting up walking groups to explore the trails through a grant funded by the Winston-Salem Foundation.
The heritage trails were developed with the help of community members and local historians William J. Rice, Ph.D., and Mel White. A heritage trail map, which explains the historical significance of the sites, will be distributed free at Neighborhood Heritage Day.
Other events are a health fair at the Sara Austin Head Start Center from 11:30 a.m.- 3 p.m., entertainment at Skyland Park from 11:30-2 p.m., and the dedication of the Brushy Fork Greenway, a trail built by the City of Winston-Salem, at 3 p.m. behind the Sara Austin Head Start Center. From 2 p.m.-3 p.m. in Skyland Park, “Fun on the Lawn” will include volleyball, drummers, steppers and storytellers. Community residents are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park.
