Women's Center of Excellence Hosts Triathlon

Triad residents will have an opportunity to see the newest Olympic sport in action when the third annual Excellence Triathlon makes a big splash at 8 a.m. August 12 at Wake Forest University.

More than 300 athletes from across the southeast will compete in the event, which is sponsored by the Women''s Health Center of Excellence at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center to raise funds for domestic violence prevention programs.

The sprint-distance event is a 300-yard pool swim, a 20 kilometer bike course and a five kilometer run. It is open to individuals and teams. Registration is $40 for individuals ($50 on race day) and $75 for relay teams ($90 on race day).

A one-mile fun run and a Splash & Dash (one-mile run and two-lap swim) begin at 10 a.m. Registration is $15 for each. Teams are allowed.

The triathlon is one of two events that will debut at the 2000 Olympics this fall in Sydney, Australia.
