David Kelly, M.D., professor and chairman of neurosurgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, is the 1999 recipient of the Harvey Cushing Medal, the highest honor given by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).
The award, given annually, recognizes AANS members for distinguished service to the field of neurological surgery. The organization has more than 5,000 members.
A leader in neurosurgery, Kelly has served as president of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has served on the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and the Residency Review Committee for Neurosurgery.
Kelly has written more than 120 books and articles and has served on the editorial boards of respected professional journals. He has been a visiting professor at close to 20 institutions. His previous awards include the Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina.
Kelly, who has been with the Medical Center since 1979, will receive the Cushing Medal April 27 at the annual meeting of the AANS in New Orleans, La.
