April 12, 1999

The Diabetes Care Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center will hold an open house on Friday, March 26 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at CompRehab Plaza on 131 Miller Street.

Free blood sugar screenings, tours, a cooking demonstration and information on diabetes will be available on-site. Certified diabetes educators and other staff will be on hand to answer questions.

More than 16 million Americans have diabetes-- 8 million are not aware they have the disease. Diabetes is a disorder that occurs when the pancreas either totally stops producing insulin or does not produce enough of the hormone for the body''s needs. Some warning signs of diabetes include constant urination (especially at night), abnormal thirst and unusual hunger (especially after eating).

Participants at the screening will undergo a finger stick for a small drop of blood and learn their results immediately. The entire process should take about two minutes.

For more information about the screening, call the Diabetes Care Center at 716-8224 or toll free at 1-877-483-3536.
