Thomas A. Arcury, PhD
Professor of Family Medicine
Arcury is a professor and vice-chair for research in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In addition, he is director of the Center for Worker Health. He has received several awards, including the Mid-Career Investigator in Clinical Sciences Awards from Wake Forest School of Medicine in 2007, the Innovative Research Award for Worker Health and Safety from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in 2006, the Outstanding Researcher Award from the National Rural Health Association Researcher Award in 2004, and the Praxis Award from the Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists in 2003. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Agromedicine, a consulting editor of the Journal of Environmental Education, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, and the Journal of Applied Gerontology.

John G. Spangler, MD
Professor, Family and Community Medicine
Spangler is one of the world's leading experts in tobacco epidemiology and was the keynote speaker for 2004 World Health Organization Tobacco and Community Health Conference in New Delhi, India. He founded the first physician-run tobacco-cessation clinic in North Carolina and was recently awarded $1.6 million grant to develop tobacco cessation curriculum for medical schools across the United States. He has won several prestigious awards including the Association of Teachers of Preventative Medicine Program of the Year Award and the Behavioral Sciences Forum Program of the Year Award. He is currently co-Principal Investigator on a longitudinal study of tobacco use among students at 11 colleges and universities in NC and VA.
