Medical Center is Included on ‘Best Hospitals’ List for 24th Consecutive Year
With five specialties listed among the nation’s finest, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings for the 24th consecutive year.
The Wake Forest Baptist specialties earning top-50 spots in the 2016-17 report, released today, were Cancer (No. 19), Nephrology (No. 25), Ear, Nose & Throat (No. 35), Diabetes & Endocrinology (No. 36) and Neurology & Neurosurgery (No. 46).
Both Cancer and Nephrology have now been nationally ranked by U.S. News for nine consecutive years. Ear, Nose & Throat has been listed four years in a row while Neurology & Neurosurgery has made two straight appearances. Diabetes & Endocrinology was last ranked in 2013.
Additionally, six specialties – Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology – were listed as “High Performing” by U.S. News, meaning that Wake Forest Baptist received recognition in 11 of the 16 adult specialties assessed by the publication.
Overall, Wake Forest Baptist ranked No. 1 in the Piedmont Triad region and No. 3 in the state.
“Any annual ranking is only a snapshot, but the fact that Wake Forest Baptist has been listed among the country’s top hospitals every year since 1993 is surely indicative of the high quality of care that we consistently provide here,” said John McConnell, M.D., the Medical Center’s CEO. “This type of recognition is a tribute to our dedicated faculty and staff and the efforts they put forth every day for the benefit of our patients and their families.”
The U.S. News “Best Hospitals” rankings are based on data-driven analysis in 12 specialties and on hospital reputation as determined by physician surveys in four areas. In the 2016-17 rankings, only 153 of the 4,667 U.S. hospitals evaluated, or 3.2 percent, were listed in at least one specialty.
In a separate U.S. News ranking of hospital performance in nine relatively common inpatient procedures and conditions, Wake Forest Baptist received the highest rating available in all of the categories (abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, congestive heart failure, heart bypass surgery, hip replacement, knee replacement and lung cancer surgery).
