Two flight paramedics with AirCare Critical Care Transport Services at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center won the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services’ (NC OEMS) statewide paramedic competition.
Roger Horton, NREMT-P, and Barry McMillian, NREMT-P, are the first flight team to win the competition, which began 25 years ago. Each team is presented with a challenging multi-patient scenario with realistic props and realistic high fidelity manikins. Teams are judged on professionalism, patient care, communication and teamwork.
Horton and McMillian, who fly out of the AirCare base in Elkin, won one of the five regional competitions before advancing to the state finals in early October at the NC OEMS annual conference. They are eligible for a national competition in February and automatically qualify for next year’s state competition.
AirCare is part of an EMS network serving patients in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina and includes air (helicopter) and ground ambulances stationed in strategic locations to provide fast, safe transportation for critically ill and injured patients.
