Wake Forest Baptist Honored by Better Business Bureau
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a 2015 Torch Award for Ethics from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Northwest North Carolina.
The BBB award recognizes companies whose leadership demonstrates impeccable character and whose practices meet the highest standards of integrity.
BBB Northwest North Carolina is an affiliate of BBB, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to setting and upholding high standards for fair and honest business behavior.
Wake Forest Baptist Receives Three Awards from National Women’s Organization
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – June 19, 2015 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been recognized by the Women’s Choice Award for cancer care, breast cancer care and patient safety.
The organization named Wake Forest Baptist one of America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care for meeting the highest cancer care accreditation standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, excelling in clinical performance with regard to patient safety measures, and having a high patient recommendation rate.
The Medical Center also received a best breast center award from the women’s organization for meeting the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers’ standards from the American College of Surgeons, carrying the Seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and scoring above the national average on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient recommendation measures.
The organization also recognized Wake Forest Baptist as one of the best hospitals for patient safety for having a low incidence of problems arising from surgical errors and infections.
Using evidence-based research, The Women’s Choice Award identifies the nation’s best hospitals to help women make smart health care choices.
Wake Forest Baptist Maya Angelou Center Forms Partnership to Address Health Disparities
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – June 19, 2015 – The Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has formed a partnership with the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Disparities at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, to address health disparities and health equity.
The institutions are partnering on two National Institutes of Health-funded projects and have plans for a co-sponsored lecture series, student research exchange program, collaborative research and policy papers, and other outreach programs. They plan to focus primarily on diabetes and obesity, two diseases that disproportionately affect minority populations.
Wake Forest Baptist Professor Emeritus Awarded Top Honor by Governor
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – June 19, 2015 – David L. Kelly Jr., M.D., professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the most valued honors bestowed by the Governor of North Carolina.
Presented to outstanding North Carolinians who have a proven record of service to the state, the award recognizes Kelly for his contributions to the medical profession, including his years of leadership in regional and national neurosurgery organizations and dedication to training the next generation of neurosurgeons.
Wake Forest School of Medicine Launches Journal of Science and Medicine
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – June 19, 2015 –Wake Forest School of Medicine has published the inaugural edition of the Wake Forest Journal of Science and Medicine (WFJSM), an open-access, peer-reviewed, biannual medical journal.
The WFJSM is the result of a collaboration between Wake Forest School of Medicine students and faculty members across Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center departments. It serves as a platform for the publication of investigative and clinical reports, timely perspectives and reviews, and reports from conferences at Wake Forest Baptist.
The goal of the WFJSM is to become an indexed journal that showcases high-quality research from Wake Forest Baptist as well as faculty and students from other academic medical centers.
Four Wake Forest Baptist Medical Students Named Albert Schweitzer Fellows
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – June 19, 2015 – Four Wake Forest School of Medicine students have been named 2015-16 North Carolina Albert Schweitzer fellows. Janice Cho, Arianne Morrison, Avani Singh and Rachel Skains will spend the next year developing lifelong leadership skills and learning how to effectively address the social factors that impact health.
The students will organize and implement service projects that address the root causes of health disparities in under-resourced communities, while also fulfilling their academic responsibilities. Cho and Singh will develop a creative arts therapy program for at-risk middle school girls in collaboration with Girls, Inc. Morrison and Skains will conduct a health education program and support group for end-stage renal disease patients undergoing dialysis at Wake Forest Baptist dialysis centers.
Named for the famed physician-humanitarian, the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is committed to developing individuals who are dedicated to and skilled at meeting the health needs of underserved people, and who, by their example, influence and inspire others.
