February 5, 2015

B. Scott Segal, M.D., professor and chair of anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center in Boston since 2010, has been named chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Co-Executive Director of Perioperative Services at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, effective March 30.

In this position Segal will direct the department’s medical education, basic and clinical research and clinical care activities.

“We are confident Dr. Segal will ensure that our clinical service is both operationally excellent and patient- and family-centered, and sustain the department’s national reputation for excellence in research and education,” said Edward Abraham, M.D., dean of Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Prior to his tenure at Tufts, Segal was vice chair for education in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, and associate professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Harvard, his M.D. at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and a master’s degree in health care management at the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his internship and a postdoctoral fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center and his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and served as a staff anesthesiologist at three Boston-area hospitals.

“Dr. Segal is board-certified in anesthesiology and has repeatedly been named among the 'Best Doctors in America' as well as recognized for teaching excellence by the international Anesthesia Research Society and by his trainees at Brigham and Women’s,” said Bobbi Carbone, M.D., M.B.A., president and chief operating officer, Wake Forest Baptist Health.

Segal is currently an oral examiner and senior examination editor for the American Board of Anesthesiology and sits on the board of directors and executive committee of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. His primary research interest is obstetric anesthesia, and he is a prolific contributor to academic publications and frequent lecturer in the field of anesthesiology.

Raymond Roy, M.D., Ph.D., professor of ambulatory and outpatient anesthesiology, will continue to serve as interim chair of anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist until Segal’s arrival.
