New Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Joins Wake Forest Baptist
Rahn Bailey, M.D., a national leader whose community-based programs focus on providing care for the traditionally underserved and those with complex medical and psychiatric conditions, has joined Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine.
Board certified in general and forensic psychiatry, Bailey is widely known for his work in inpatient care, medical education, research and forensic evaluations. In his new position, he leads a team of full-time faculty, residents and support staff that is tasked with enhancing and growing the department’s clinical, educational and research programs at Wake Forest Baptist.
Wake Forest Baptist Recognized for Stroke Care
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 29, 2015 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received the Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
Wake Forest Baptist received the award for implementing quality achievement measures aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
Get with the Guidelines is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program that provides hospitals with the latest research-based guidelines.
Wake Forest Baptist Recognized for Meeting Highest Standards of Care for ALS
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 29, 2015 – The ALS Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been recertified as a Treatment Center of Excellence by the national ALS Association (ALSA) for providing the highest level of evidence-based quality care and services.
To be eligible for the designation, centers must offer diversity of professional expertise in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and access to coordinated, multidisciplinary care. In addition, they must have a strong, ongoing relationship with the local ALSA chapter and actively participate in ALS research.
ALSA is a national nonprofit health organization dedicated to the fight against ALS.
Three Wake Forest Baptist Faculty Members Named Fellows of National Society
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 29, 2015 – Samuel Deadwyler, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology, Mark Espeland, Ph.D., professor of public health sciences, and Ronald Oppenheim, Ph.D., emeritus professor of neurobiology and anatomy, have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
AAAS fellows are honored for their contributions to innovation, education and scientific leadership. Deadwyler and Oppenheim were recognized in the neuroscience category and Espeland in statistics.
AAAS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of all people.
Wake Forest Baptist Director Chosen to Serve on National Organization’s Task Force
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 29, 2015 – Camey Thomason, administrative director of the Department of Pathology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been chosen to serve on the national Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA)’s Early Careerist Task Force.
Thomason and twelve other young professionals will serve on the year-long task force. It was created to help HFMA engage and understand the needs of early careerists in order to help them develop and maintain productive and satisfying careers in health care finance.
HFMA is an organization for health care finance leaders.
Wake Forest Baptist Associate Professor Appointed to State Advisory Committee
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 29, 2015 – Shree Kurup, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been appointed to a three-year term on the North Carolina Professional Advisory Committee by Gov. Pat McCrory.
The committee consists of licensed eye care professionals who advise the Commission for the Blind on matters related to the acquisition and use of professional services. Selections were made based on professional experience, accolades and research.
