Wake Forest Baptist Joins Relief Effort to Send Medical Supplies to West Africa

October 22, 2014

A pallet of medical supplies is on its way from Winston-Salem to Liberia to support Ebola relief in that region. Surgical masks, exam gloves and IV sets make up just part of the more than 6,000 medical items Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center donated to Samaritan’s Purse.

Wake Forest Baptist has a history of contributing to health initiatives in many parts of the world through its Office of Global Health, which keeps medical supplies on hand for upcoming outreach projects such as the one in Liberia.

Bret Nicks, M.D., associate dean of Global Health at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center joined Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines; Sean Sanz, the chief operating officer for Novant Health-Forsyth Medical Center; Marlon Hunter, the Forsyth County public health director; James Hunder, the president of the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont; and Kendall Kauffeldt, the director of Liberia and West Africa donations for Samaritan’s Purse during Wednesday’s announcement of the joint effort to help their global neighbors.

“Wake Forest Baptist is committed to supporting our local community efforts for the people of Forsyth County, the counties in our region that we serve, the people of Liberia through the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont, the ongoing work of Samaritan’s Purse, and the global community where we work every day,” said Nicks.

Samaritan’s Purse will deliver the donated medical supplies to Liberia.
