Wake Forest Baptist Honored for Growth of CPR Training Program
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 26, 2013 – The CPR Community Training Program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) for being in the top 1 percent in the nation in growth.
The Wake Forest Baptist program was one of two in North Carolina and 28 in the country to be cited by the AHA.
Kathy Nelson, R.N., program coordinator at Wake Forest Baptist, said the program’s goal “is to improve community initiatives and help save lives. In 2012, we collaboratively trained 27,665 people to be able to do just that.”
Wake Forest Baptist Research to be Featured by National Organization
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 26, 2013 – The work of a research team from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will be featured in a 2014 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) campaign.
The Wake Forest Baptist team is headed by Thomas A. Arcury, Ph.D., professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Other team members are Alain G. Bertoni, M.D., Iris Leng, Ph.D., David Miller, M.D., Ha Nguyen, Ph.D., and Sara A. Quandt, Ph.D.
The team’s study proposes that the ability to access, manage and understand personal health information enables people to become better consumers and participate more fully in making health care decisions. The potential effect on community health and health inequities taken from the team’s research will be featured in one of 10 videos in the AAMC’s inaugural Health Equity Research Snapshot.
Wake Forest Baptist Physician Wins NCI Award for Team Leadership
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 26, 2013 – John H. Stewart IV, M.D., associate dean of clinical research and innovation and vice chair of general surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded the 2013 National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award.
The two-year award, one of 11 given this year to cancer investigators across the nation, is presented by the NCI “in recognition of outstanding clinical investigators whose participation and activities promote a culture of successful clinical research.”
Stewart’s research focuses on immunotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of cancer.
Director of Nurse Anesthesia Program at Wake Forest Baptist Wins Alumnus Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 26, 2013 – Michael Rieker, D.N.P., director of the nurse anesthesia program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named the Outstanding Scholar Alumnus of 2013 by Penn State University’s Schreyer Honors College.
The award recognizes university honors program graduates whose professional success and civic achievements demonstrate exemplary leadership skills, personal achievement and a passion for lifelong learning.
Earlier this year, Rieker was selected as a 2013 Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing while the nurse anesthesia program at Wake Forest Baptist became the first in the country and the second in the world to be accredited by the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists.
