Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to Host Career Day for High School Students

October 3, 2012

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is hosting a Research Career Day on Saturday, Oct. 20 to introduce high school students in western North Carolina to career opportunities in biomedical research. Students in grades nine through 12 are eligible to attend.

The event, which is open to students and their teachers and parents, will include a presentation by Janice D. Wagner, D.V.M., Ph.D., vice president and senior associate dean for research at Wake Forest Baptist, and a panel discussion by biomedical research professionals who work in positions such as laboratory technology, manufacturing, animal resources, doctoral-level scientist and physician-scientist.

Following the panel discussion, students will tour the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, where scientists work to engineer replacement tissues and organs in the laboratory. At the institute, students will learn about technologies used in research and meet some of the many research professionals involved in laboratory operations.

The goal of the day is to introduce students to a variety of research career opportunities, explain how multiple disciplines work together, and review the educational requirements for various careers.
