Beginning today, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s aquatic programs and certified instructors will provide a new aquatic course designed for individuals with arthritis and related rheumatic diseases or musculoskeletal conditions.
“This new arthritis class will be held at Salemtowne Retirement Pool and will benefit individuals who are sedentary and limited by impaired joint mobility, people with only mild joint involvement and those experiencing problems with fatigue,” said Debbie Drayton, Recreation Therapy Department at Wake Forest Baptist. “These classes also provide a friendly, fun atmosphere in which participants can make new friends and try new activities.”
The aquatic exercise classes are meant to provide participants with an enjoyable and safe exercise program option which may result in:
- Improved joint range of motion and muscle strength
- Reduced pain and stiffness
- Decreased fatigue and increased endurance
- Improved performance of daily activities
- Positive social interaction with others with similar issues
- An enhanced feeling of overall well-being.
The classes will be provided to members of the Winston-Salem community at 3 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays for a fee of $30 per month. Space is limited and registration is required.
