Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Receives Hastings Center Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dec. 15, 2010 – Savithri Nageswaran, M.B.B.S., M.P.H., assistant professor of Pediatrics at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded the Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Early Career Physician Award for 2011. The award is given to physicians whose patient care is exemplary, who model good medicine for other physicians and who emphasize the importance of end-of-life care as a basic part of the doctor-patient relationship.
Nageswaran received her undergraduate and medical degrees from Madras University Kilpauk Medical College in India. She completed a residency at Wake Forest Baptist. In addition to her medical background, Nageswaran also has a master’s in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Wake Forest Baptist Graduate Program Receives High Marks
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dec. 15, 2010 – The Molecular Medicine and Translational Science (MMTS) Graduate Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine recently received high national rankings from Academic Analytics, LLC, a company that ranks universities based on faculty scholarly productivity (FSP). The MMTS program ranked six out of 48, compared to similar programs nationally.
The FSP index is based on publications, citations, grants and honorary awards. Academic Analytics is based out of Stony Brook, N.Y.
The MMTS program trains doctoral students in research to better understand human diseases at a molecular level and translate that knowledge to improved diagnostics, treatment, and disease prevention.
Lord Installed as NCAFP President
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dec. 15, 2010 – Richard Lord Jr., M.D., assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, was installed as the president of the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians (NCFAP) during its annual Winter Family Physician’s Weekend held Dec. 2-5 in Asheville. Aside from providing personal leadership to the Academy, Lord will also influence the establishment of organizational goals and objectives and act as spokesperson.
Lord completed his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his training at the Rush-Christ Family Practice Residency in Chicago. In addition to his medical background, he holds a master’s in Economics from UNC-Greensboro.
The NCAFP is the state's largest specialty medical association, with a membership of more than 2,700 family physicians and is a federated chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Its core purpose and mission is to advance the specialty of family medicine in order to improve the health of patients, families and communities in North Carolina.
Medical Center Receives NCPP Red Star
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dec. 15, 2010 – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is shining in a new “spotlight.”
The Medical Center is featured in the North Carolina Prevention Partners’ (NCPP) “Spotlight on Success” for being the first hospital in the state to receive Quitline NC’s Red Star status, the program’s top achievement level. Participating hospitals that fax in 300 or more referrals to the Quitline qualify for the Red Star. Wake Forest Baptist exceeded that requirement by faxing in 419 referrals between July and October.
Quitline is free to participate in and is part of NCPP’s Quit Now NC program, which is dedicated to helping people with tobacco cessation. Hospitals participating in Quitline fax in names of patients or employees who may want education and support in stopping their tobacco use. NCPP follows up on the referral by offering confidential support and resources.
This year’s Quitline Champion Challenge began in July and will run through April of 2011. The hospital with the most fax referrals at the end of the challenge will be named Quitline Champion.
