Russell Howerton Named Chief Medical Officer of Wake Forest Baptist

Russell Howerton, M.D., F.A.C.S., has been named Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the integrated health system of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

As the CMO, Howerton’s responsibilities will span Wake Forest Baptist’s full continuum of clinical care, including North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Brenner Children’s Hospital, Lexington Memorial Hospital and Davie County Hospital; as well as the ambulatory care clinics of Wake Forest University Physicians and Community Physicians.

He will have major leadership and operational responsibilities for clinical quality and excellence in collaboration with clinical department chairs, the chief nursing officer and administrative co-management partners.

Howerton previously served as vice chief medical officer at Wake Forest Baptist. He is currently a professor in the Department of General Surgery. His areas of clinical specialty include liver and pancreas surgery.

Howerton earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed a hepatobiliary fellowship at Hammersmith Hospital in London. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
