Bushardt Appointed Chair of Physician Assistant Studies at Wake Forest Baptist

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Reamer L. Bushardt, Pharm.D, R.Ph. PA-C, has been appointed chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The appointment will become effective July 1, 2010.

Bushardt comes to Wake Forest Baptist from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston (MUSC). He brings with him excellent credentials in academics, research, and clinical activities. Since 2008 he has been associate professor and director of the Division of Physician Assistant Studies, Department of Health Professions, in MUSC’s College of Health Professions. His teaching areas include pharmacology, pharmacotherapeutics, pathophysiology, graduate research, international health and tropical medicine, and professional issues and ethics.

Bushardt also served as academic coordinator, then director, of the MUSC Physician Assistant Program. He has research experience as an investigator on projects funded by U.S. Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, and industry. His clinical experience at MUSC included support for ongoing clinical trials within the General Clinical Research Center for studies on weight loss and dietary supplements, cardiovascular disease and CT angiography, and safety of magnetic resonance imaging contrast media in advanced interventional neurology. He also has experience in community practice as a pharmacist and a physician assistant.

After graduating cum laude from the University of South Carolina at Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Science, Bushardt earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, with honors, from the same institution. He holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Physician Assisting from MUSC. In 2006 he was named Innovative Pharmacist of the Year by the South Carolina Pharmacy Association. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants since 2008 and is author of the 2005 Medication Update for the Health Professional.
