Father’s Cancer Is Inspiration for Benefit Concert

March 2, 2010

Not every 16 year-old would embark on a huge undertaking like planning a benefit concert.  But Megan Wright, a junior at Greensboro Day School, is not your typical teenager.  The inspiration for the concert was her desire to help in her father’s battle with oral cancer.

“My Dad, Wes Wright, was unexpectedly diagnosed with oral cancer last Fall,” she said. “I felt really helpless the whole way through his treatment but I needed to do something.  It helped keep my mind off things and made me feel productive.”

The first benefit concert took place three weeks after her father completed radiation therapy and raised nearly $4,000 for the Cancer Patient Support Program (CPSP) at Wake Forest Baptist’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Megan wanted to do even more.  A second benefit concert is scheduled for Sunday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street in Greensboro.  Admission is $8 and proceeds will again benefit the CPSP.  The featured performer is Daniel Levi Goans, a native of the Outer Banks, whose debut album, Choice Cannonballs, was recently released.

“Megan is a remarkable young lady and a father couldn’t wish for a better daughter,” said Wright.  “My recovery was long and painful but I am doing well now.  I attribute my successful outcome not only to the care I received at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, but also to the strength and determination I gained from my daughter.”
