WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Raymond C. Roy, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed interim president of Wake Forest University Physicians (WFUP), a position that was created in the overall restructuring of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center
earlier this year.
With the approval of the Medical Center board of directors, Roy was appointed by
William B. Applegate, M.D., interim president of Wake Forest University Health
Sciences. Under the new Medical Center structure, the WFUP president will
eventually report to the Medical Center CEO, another new position created in the
restructuring, as will the presidents of Wake Forest Health Sciences and North
Carolina Baptist Hospital.
A nationwide search is currently under way by the Medical Center board for the new
CEO.
Applegate said he asked the Medical Center board to appoint the WFUP president
now, rather than wait for the new CEO, to facilitate the organizational changes
now taking place.
“We needed to bring WFUP more into an equal partnership with the other components of our overall organization, and to establish a working relationship on a day-to-day basis,” Applegate said.
He said the new WFUP president position is part of an effort to involve physicians
more in positions of leadership at the Medical Center. He also cited the recent
addition of two Wake Forest physicians – Neal Kon, M.D., chair of Cardiothoracic
Surgery, and Allison Brashear, M.D., chair of Neurology – to the Medical Center
board of directors.
Applegate, Donny C. Lambeth, interim president of Baptist Hospital, and Douglas L.
Edgeton, executive vice president and COO of WFU Health Sciences, meet on a
regular basis to discuss Medical Center-wide issues. Applegate said that Roy,
representing WFUP, will now become part of that leadership team.
WFUP is the business organization for the physicians who are also faculty members
of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The physicians serve the inpatients
of Baptist Hospital as well as outpatients in their own clinics.
“This new position will help us to better address the clinical mission of the
Medical Center, and to further the process of unifying our organization by giving
the physicians regular representation among the senior leadership,” said Lambeth.
Roy, who also serves on the Baptist Hospital Board of Trustees, is chairman of the
Department of Anesthesiology and director of the Preoperative Assessment Clinic.
He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. from
Duke University and his medical degree from Tulane University.
