Robert J. Applegate, MD
Professor, Cardiology
Dr. Applegate was the lead investigator of a study to evaluate the safety of drug-eluding stents with results published in the American Journal of Cardiology. The Heart Center at Wake Forest Baptist was one of the first in NC to participate in multicenter clinical trials. Applegate's team observed lower cumulative rates of non-fatal heart attacks and death at nine months in patients treated with drug-eluting stents compared to patients treated with bare metal stents. He is listed in Best Doctors in America.

Burke is nationally recognized as a scientist evaluating cardiovascular disease in population settings. He is the Principal Investigator and National Steering Committee Chair for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a study that seeks to better understand the importance of subclinical vascular disease in predicting heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. He is also the PI for the Cardiovascular Heath Study (investigating heart disease in older adults), and the MESA Air Pollution Study (investigating the importance of air pollution on heart disease). Dr. Burke is the director for the Division of Public Health Sciences, a large multidisciplinary research group at the medical school seeking to identify better ways to reduce chronic disease in the community.

Professor of Internal Medicine - Cardiology and Radiology
Hundley, a cardiologist, was the first in the world to use magnetic resonance imaging to visualize and measure blood flow in the coronary arteries, as well as the first to show that MRI stress testing can identify those at risk of heart attack or dying from a heart attack. He trains and teaches physicians worldwide in MRI. He was awarded the National Institute of Health's "Clinical Associate Physician Award" in 1999 and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles related to the use of imaging in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease.
